Thank you for your interest in the Project Management Professional (PMP)® Credential. We are in receipt of your application and have identified the following concerns:
1. Project Management Experience - The project work experience you documented as projects does not meet our requirements as written; it appears from the deliverables you documented that they are operational and administrative in nature. Using the principles of project management in operational and administrative tasks can be very effective, but does not provide the professional project management experience required for the PMP credential.
Please note, although PMI does not require the title of Project Manager on projects submitted, we do require you perform the role of project manager for each project. If you did not serve in the role of project manager for each project experience, it will not fulfill our requirements and your application may be formally rejected.
PMI will constitute project management experience as professional if it meets the following requirements:
The PMBOK® Guide defines a project as "A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result." Project deliverables are defined as “Any unique and verifiable product, result, or capability to perform a service that must be produced to complete a process, phase, or project."
Organization sponsoring the project must be a legally registered/certified entity.
Individual is recognized by the sponsoring organization as leading and directing the project.
Project management experience that is non-compensated project management related services volunteered to a recognized community or charitable organization does meet PMI’s project management experiential requirements. Examples of which are, but not excluded to:
Acting as PM for the construction of a facility for a recognized charitable or community organization.
Working as part of a PM team, with leadership or director responsibility for the design and deployment for an outreach program for a local charity.
Regarding deliverables, PMI requires that they align to the project management processes – initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing. If you feel the projects previously submitted fit PMI’s requirements then simply revise the descriptions of your role in each project when you resubmit your application.
2. Project Descriptions - The descriptions you provided are unclear regarding the tasks per process area and the leadership role that you specifically performed. Please provide descriptions with less detail of the project and more focus on your role with the following standards and tasks in mind.
PMI requires that qualified PMP candidates:
* Perform their duties under general supervision and are responsible for all aspects of the project for the life of the project
* Lead and direct cross-functional teams to deliver projects within the constraints of schedule, budget and resources
* Demonstrate sufficient knowledge and experience to appropriately apply a methodology to projects that have reasonably well-defined project requirements and deliverables.
We are unable to ascertain from the project descriptions you have provided if you served as a leader in the capacity on the projects per the aforementioned role definition. Project descriptions should be documented clearly enough to ascertain whether or not the projects documented truly are projects (please refer to PMBOK®Guide, 5th Edition, Section 3.2).
Further, project descriptions should consist of the following:
* A brief, one-sentence project objective
* Project deliverables summarized by process areas (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing - abbreviations are acceptable IN, PL, EX, MC & CL)
* A brief, one-sentence project outcome
Project descriptions should be a high level summary of the tasks you led and directed on the project (e.g. Initiating: develop project charter, WBS etc.; Planning: Scope definition etc.; and so on). Project management experience is required in each of the process areas when all projects are totaled, but not on each project. Project descriptions must be provided for all projects submitted on application. Please revise the project descriptions.
3. Project Management Education - PMI does not recognize entire degree programs, only individual courses. It appears that you have listed the degree program you were enrolled in, rather than the individual courses you completed. Please submit each project management related course individually including the number of contact hours per course.
If only a portion of a course dealt with project management, only the hours spent on project management can be applied toward the total.
The course content must be on a process group (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling and Closing), a knowledge area (Project Integration Management, Project Scope Management, Project Time Management, Project Cost Management, Project Quality Management, Project Human Resource Management, Project Communication Management, Project Risk Management and Project Procurement Management), and/or the project management processes (their inputs, outputs, tools and techniques).
Your application has been moved to a pending status so that you may address the aforementioned concerns. To edit your application, please use our online certification system at https://certification.pmi.org/
Please contact us at certquestions@pmi.org if you have questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Program Administration Team
